The delivery drones are coming, and they’re bearing coffee.  If you happened to look at the sky over Zurich, Switzerland on Wednesday, you might have seen a drone fly over the city and deliver a hot cup of java onto the roof of a parked Mercedes-Benz van. As TechCrunch reports, the occasion marks the first successful delivery for Matternet , a logistics company focused on drones. For the next three weeks Mattenet will be shuttling coffee by local e-commerce company Siroop over Switzerland’s largest city. It’s not exactly a door-to-door type thing, which means humans aren’t quite out of the equation yet. The vans, provided by Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler, serve as helicopter landing pads of sorts for the drones. The drones fly autonomously for the most part, but the specially made vans guide them in through GPS for greater precision on the last stretches of the journey. Not only did they create robo-fruit to mix in with the real ones, but another research team has created a biodegradable temperature sensor that sticks to food all the way from its starting point to the inside of your mouth. The issue in an nutshell is that it’s a pain to manually test food that needs to stay at a certain temperature, but if you can monitor it constantly and wirelessly, you can save time and energy. You can do that right now, in a way, with RFID tags and so on — but those tags use metals that aren’t recommended for eating, and may even be poisonous. Uber has added a new feature to its app this month to support its deaf and hard of hearing drivers, a group the company says number in the thousands across its service. Uber says that these drivers have together completed millions of trips, and while it has added a number of features to its app over the years to provide additional support for those with hearing impairments, it’s going a step further with a new feature launching at the end of Deaf Awareness Month, which takes place in September. The new feature will surface a card in the feed of the rider app when they’re paired up with a driver who is deaf or hard of hearing that will give them an option to learn some basic words and phrases in American Sign Language (ASL). The rider can select basic greeting like “Hello” and “Thank you,” or learn the letters to spell out their name so they can confirm it to the driver. Like many cities, Moscow has an enormous network of CCTV cameras, but unlike many cities, thousands of those cameras are now hooked up to a powerful facial recognition system that can track criminals (and trash collectors) wherever they go. The privacy implications are serious, of course, but a large scale rollout like this will help make them part of the public discussion. The facial recognition system, devised by Russian AI firm NTechLab (previously), has actually been in use since early this year as a pilot program, but is now in official use. I spoke with Artem Ermolaev, CIO of the city’s Department of Information Technologies, about the reasoning behind doing this. Too many developers don’t follow best practices for navigating sites without visual cues. Destinations that lean heavily on images can prove inscrutable. They don’t have to, though. Following its meeting with members of the Senate and House’s respective intelligence committees, Twitter has issued new details on the information it is providing to aid the congressional investigations into Russia’s potential interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Twitter, like Facebook, is being examined for its part in spreading content created or paid for by Russian state-sponsored entities with the desire to influence U.S. politics. The meat of Twitter’s new disclosure is its effort to cross-reference Facebook’s list of 470 accounts believed to be linked to the Russian government. Its aluminum unibody lends the phone a premium feel, and I appreciate its matte finish.The glass rear that used to be a fingerprint magnet on previous models is thankfully gone. Boston-based private equity shop Berkshire Partners announced this afternoon that it is acquiring Accela — a nearly 20 year old startup that sells regulatory management solutions to government clients. Accela has gone through a troika of CEOs in the last year. Previously acting CEO Mark Jung replaced Maury Blackman last October who had managed the company for about a decade. Five months later, current CEO Ed Daihl took over to presumably drive the company towards an exit. Prior to today’s acquisition by Berkshire Partners, Accela had raised $235.6 million from ABRY Partners, Karlani Capital, Landmark Growth Capital Partners and others. American Airlines and Casper are announcing a new partnership that could help passengers (like me) who have trouble sleeping on flights. They’re not going as far as putting Casper mattresses on planes. Instead, they say they worked together to create eight new sleep products designed to improve in-flight slumber. Those products include a mattress pad that fits over your seat, a regular pillow and a lumbar pillow, a pillowcase, a duvet, a blanket, pajamas and slippers. GoPro has announced the Hero 6 Black as its latest flagship action camera, and as we predicted – and as was rumored – it can shoot at 4K resolutions at a silky-smooth 60fps. While many cameras can shoot at Ultra HD resolutions (3840 x 2160), ones that can do so at a high frame rate of 60fps are few and far between. The fact that some massive DSLRs, like the Canon 5D Mark IV and Nikon D850 , can only shoot at 4K up to 30fps is a testament to the Hero 6 Black’s capabilities. Aside from it being an headline-grabbing feature, users will find the higher frame rates helpful when they want to slow down footage and show action happening frame-by-frame.
